About our founder

Smith grew up in Toledo, Ohio, and has lived in Montana for nearly two decades. Smith founded Vista Law, PLLC in January 2023, where his practice focuses on environmental law, property/real estate law, and small water utility law.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wake Forest University, a law degree from the University of Montana, and a Master of Law degree in Environmental Law from Lewis & Clark University.  While in law school, Mac served as the Publication Editor for the Public Land and Resources Law Review.  Before starting Vista Law, Smith was an attorney at Church Harris in Great Falls and Doney Crowley in Helena.

Smith is the former Montana State Bar’s Chair of the Natural Resource, Energy, & Environmental Law Section.  He has published papers or presented publicly on remediating property contamination, small water utility regulation, mineral leases, and the public trust doctrine, among other topics.

As a real estate developer with experience in renovating historic properties, Smith also has personal business experience that pairs with legal experience in undertaking a real estate project.

Smith currently serves on the boards of the Great Falls Ski Patrol Foundation, Preserve Montana, and his HOA.  When he is not practicing law, Smith enjoys spending time outdoors, especially skiing, fly fishing, hiking, or playing tennis or golf.  He is married to Laura and has two wonderful girls, Clara and Gracie, as well as a lab, Smoochie.
