About our founder

Smith grew up in Toledo, Ohio, and has lived in Montana for nearly two decades. Smith founded Vista Law, PLLC in January 2023, where his practice focuses on property law, small utility law, business transactions, and environmental law.

Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Wake Forest University, a law degree from the University of Montana, and a Master of Law degree in Environmental Law from Lewis & Clark University.  While in law school, Mac served as the Publication Editor for the Public Land and Resources Law Review.  Before starting Vista Law, Smith was an attorney at Church Harris in Great Falls and Doney Crowley in Helena.

Smith is the former Montana State Bar’s Chair of the Natural Resource, Energy, & Environmental Law Section.  He has published papers or presented publicly on remediating property contamination, small water utility regulation, mineral leases, and the public trust doctrine, among other topics. Smith is a graduate of the NARUC Rate School on water utility rate-making

Smith currently serves on the boards of the Helena Ski Patrol Foundation and Preserve Montana.  When he is not practicing law, Smith enjoys spending time outdoors, especially skiing, fly fishing, hiking, and playing tennis.  He is married to Laura and has two wonderful girls and a pet lab.
